Frequently Asked

Questions

Yes. We offer full servicing and maintenance for electric and hybrid vehicles, using specialist diagnostic equipment. As EV and hybrid ownership grows, we’ve invested in the tools and training to care for them properly — you don’t need to go to a main dealer. If you’re unsure whether your vehicle is covered, give us a call and we’ll confirm straight away.

Unlikely. With over 40 years on the tools, we’ve worked on pretty much everything — from ageing everyday runabouts to less common makes and models. If you’re unsure, just call us with your registration number and we’ll tell you straight away whether we can help.

We provide a written report after every service, detailing exactly what was checked, what was done, and the condition of key components. If parts have been replaced, you’re entitled to keep the old ones, just let us know when you book. We’d rather show our working than ask you to take our word for it.

An MOT is a legal requirement ensuring your car meets the minimum acceptable road safety and environmental standards, as defined by the DVSA. A service is a vehicle inspection designed to keep your car running as the manufacturer intended it covers more than an MOT and in greater depth. The MOT is legally required annually; a service is strongly recommended but not compulsory.

The government sets a maximum price of £54.85 for a Class 4 car MOT no garage can legally charge more for the test itself. Many garages charge less, with prices typically ranging from £30–£45. Be cautious of very low prices (£25 or under), as garages may offset a loss-leader MOT with higher repair charges if your vehicle fails.

A full MOT typically takes 45–60 minutes. An interim service takes 45–75 minutes; a full service up to 90 minutes. If additional work is identified during either, we’ll contact you before proceeding, which may extend the time.

If your previous MOT is still valid and there are no dangerous defects listed, you may drive the car away. If dangerous defects are recorded, you cannot drive it at all. The only exception is driving to a pre-booked MOT appointment at a garage, and you’d need to show proof of booking if stopped by police.

Most manufacturers recommend a service every 12,000 miles or every 12 months whichever comes first. Your car’s owner manual will state the specific schedule for your model, including any mileage or time intervals requiring particular tasks. If you’re unsure, bring it in and we’ll check against your vehicle’s schedule.

A standard service typically includes an oil and filter change, brake check, tyre inspection (tread depth and pressure), fluid level checks (coolant, brake fluid, windscreen washer), lights and wipers check, battery test, and a general inspection of suspension, exhaust, and steering. A full service goes further covering air filter, spark plugs, fuel filter, and a more detailed examination. We provide a written report after every service.

Prices vary by vehicle make, model, age, and garage type. An interim service on a small hatchback typically costs around £130; a full service on a larger SUV can be £240 or more. Independent garages generally charge less than main dealers. We provide a fixed quote before any work begins call or book online for an upfront price.

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, a garage must use reasonable care and skill when completing repairs, servicing, or investigations on your car. We will always contact you before carrying out any work beyond what was originally agreed, provide a clear explanation of what was found, and give you the choice of whether to proceed. You will never be charged for unapproved work.

Yes, and it’s often the most practical option. Having both done in a single visit saves time and can reduce costs. At Boxer Motor, you can book both together online in minutes.

Yes both. We stamp physical service books and update digital service records where applicable. Keeping your service history complete and accurate matters for your warranty, your peace of mind, and the resale value of your car. We make sure it’s done correctly every time.

Your car stays securely on our premises overnight. We’ll always let you know if the work requires more than a day, and we’ll keep you updated on progress so you’re never left wondering. If timing is a concern, mention it when you book and we’ll do our best to work around you.

We accept cash and all major debit and credit cards. Payment is taken on collection once the work is complete and you’ve had a chance to go through the invoice. If you have any questions about your bill before paying, just ask we’re happy to walk you through it.
