MOT Tests
Before you take your car to the MOT test station, there are a few checks you can carry out yourself to help it pass. These include:
Lights – check all lights: side lights, rear lights, brake lights, main beam, fog lights, hazard lights, indicators etc. Replace bulbs where necessary
Screen wash – ensure this is topped up fully
Wipers – check for splits or worn rubber – replace if necessary
Windscreen – ensure there are no chips or cracks. Anything more than 10mm in zone ‘A’ which is the driver’s side of windscreen will cause the car to fail and anything beyond 40mm in zone ‘B’ which is windscreen wiper reach of the car will cause a fail.
Oil Levels – ensure the levels sit between minimum/maximum – top up if necessary
Registration Plates – ensure these are clean and undamaged
MOT CUSTOMERS PLEASE NOTE:
You should tell us at the before or at the start of the MOT, if you think your car should not be run or ‘revved up’ in accordance with the test requirements. We are happy to advise you of these requirements upon request.
To reduce the possibility of damage and increase the chances of passing, you should:
- keep your vehicle maintained according to manufacturer’s specifications
- have the camshaft drive belt replaced at the recommended intervals
- go for the MOT with a fully warmed up engine – it will produce less smoke and is safer to test (diesels)
- not tamper with any engine or governor settings

BEFORE YOUR MOT PLEASE NOTE:
The vehicle will be inspected, depending on the age and fuel type of the vehicle, to check that it meets the rules for exhaust emissions. We may ask you whether your drive/cambelt has been changed within the manufacturer specified time/mileage limits, but It is the customers responsibility to notify us if it has not been.
The MOT tester will refuse to test your vehicle if they think that the diesel smoke test or any other part of the test may damage your engine. But it is the customers responsibility to have maintained the vehicle correctly in advance of the test.
